Max Payne 3 is a third-person shooter video game developed by Rockstar Studios and published by Rockstar Games . It is the third game in the Max Payne series and was released for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in May 2012 and Microsoft Windows in June. Development was coordinated by Rockstar Vancouver in collaboration with studios in New England , London and Toronto . It is the first game in the series not developed by the Finnish company Remedy Entertainment and not written by series creator Sam Lake . The main writer of Max Payne 3 was Dan Houser , who also wrote Red Dead Redemption , Grand Theft Auto IV and Bully , among other successful games.
