Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is an open world action -adventure stealth video game developed by Kojima Productions and published by Konami for the Microsoft Windows , PlayStation 3 , PlayStation 4 , Xbox 360 , and Xbox One platforms . It was released worldwide on September 1, 2015. The eleventh game in the Metal Gear series and the ninth directed, designed and written by Hideo Kojima after Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes, a standalone prologue, as well as his last project before leaving Konami.

Set in 1984, nine years after the events of Ground Zeroes and a decade before the events of the first Metal Gear , the game follows Punished “Venom” Snake (aka Big Boss ) on his adventures through Soviet-occupied Kabul and the Angola – Zaire border , seeking revenge against the people who destroyed his forces and nearly killed him at the end of Ground Zeroes . It still carries the tagline Tactical Espionage Operations , first used in Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker .
